Placement methods

A HIAB lorry can lift the container into position where there’s enough reach, overhead clearance and stable ground for the outriggers. A side loader can place it close to the vehicle where side access is available.

On a tight Basildon plot, a smaller container may be safer and easier to position because it needs less vehicle movement. If the final location sits behind a wall, fence or hedge, check the proposed delivery method before confirming the order.

Condensation forms when warm, moisture-laden air cools against the container’s steel roof and walls. It isn’t always evidence of a leak.

Only store goods when they’re dry, leave small airflow gaps around them and use vents or a dehumidifier if power is available. Cardboard, fabrics and paper are particularly sensitive. Raise them off the floor and don’t stack them directly against the walls.

Simple maintenance checks

For long-term storage, the ground beneath the container matters just as much as the steel shell. Uneven settlement can make the doors stiff or pull them out of alignment. Re-level the unit as soon as you notice a problem. A small early adjustment is much easier than dealing with a frame that’s remained twisted for months.

Export use, CSC compliance and freight paperwork

If the container will leave site as part of an export move, you’ll need to assess it differently. A CSC plate is the safety approval plate confirming that the container has passed structural testing for transport use. It’s required for international shipping and by many freight operators.

The container also needs sound corner castings, working doors, a usable floor and no holes or frame damage that could affect loading or seaworthiness.

These references apply when a container is used for export packing, shipping or onward trade rather than storage on one site.

Tare means the container’s empty weight. Payload is the maximum cargo weight it’s designed to carry. Check both figures on the plate while planning the load, particularly if the loaded container will travel to port through Essex or pass to a freight operator with its own weight controls.

A container used for export storage still needs careful packing, even if it won’t travel directly by sea. Spread heavy items evenly, restrain loose goods and make sure the doors close without force. Good packing makes the container safer to move and easier to inspect at its destination.

Lead times depend on available stock, the condition grade, delivery method and any fitting work. Standard 20ft and 40ft containers are usually easier to source than specialist units with refrigeration, custom doors or shelving.
