Choosing the right container size and type

Start with access. Then work out how much internal room you need for loading, storing and retrieving goods.

A 20ft dry container is the most common choice because it fits many smaller yards and is easier to move than a 40ft unit. A 40ft container gives you more floor space for bulk stock, palletised goods or plant, but the site must accommodate the longer vehicle and container.

These are typical external dimensions for standard units. Internal measurements are smaller because of the walls and structural frame. Tare means the container’s empty weight, while payload is the maximum cargo weight it can carry.

Don’t judge a container by length alone. A standard dry unit usually has double doors at one end, and the opening width and floor height will affect pallet loading, forklift access and the movement of bulky items. A CSC plate is the safety approval plate showing that a container has passed inspection for international transport. If the unit will leave the UK or carry marine freight, the plate needs to be current and readable. Appearance is only part of the decision. Check that the floor is sound, the doors move and close properly, the seals remain intact and the frame isn’t distorted. A low-cost container soon becomes poor value if its doors bind in winter or damaged gaskets let water reach the contents.

For ordinary yard or domestic storage, a wind and watertight unit is often enough if the contents aren’t sensitive. Export staging generally calls for a cargo-worthy or IICL-graded unit, particularly where a carrier, shipping line or receiving terminal requires documented condition. Look closely at the floor too. Many containers have timber flooring suitable for general storage, but soft areas, oil damage and water staining can cause problems for food, packaging or sensitive stock.

Buying or hiring a container in Brent

Delivery, site access and HIAB placement

Most placements use a HIAB or another crane-equipped lorry. The driver can lift the container from the vehicle and lower it into position without a separate forklift. Some sites can use a side-loader, though it needs clear, firm ground and enough straight access to align the trailer.

If direct placement isn’t possible, change the delivery plan before the vehicle sets off. It’s much easier than trying to solve a lifting or access problem at the roadside.

The standing area must be firm, level and capable of carrying the load. Concrete, tarmac and compacted hardcore are common choices. Export checks and the buying process

An export container needs more than a sound storage condition. The frame, floor, doors and CSC plate must all be checked. A valid CSC plate shows that the unit has passed the inspection required for international transport. It needs to be visible and current, and the container must be structurally sound enough for the carrier to accept it.
