Some flat racks have fixed ends, while others have collapsible ends. Fixed ends can support cargo during loading and transit. Collapsible ends take up less space when an empty rack is returned on a vehicle. Condition grades, inspection and what they mean in practice

Common condition grades

  • One-trip usually means the rack has made one sea journey from the factory and is then sold in near-new condition.
  • Cargo-worthy means the rack has been inspected and is considered suitable for freight use, subject to acceptance by the shipping line or operator.
  • IICL refers to a condition standard based on inspection rules used by the Institute of International Container Lessors. It has tighter acceptance requirements than a basic cargo-worthy grade.

Check the deck, corner castings, end frames, welds and lashing points during inspection. If the rack is for export, make sure the inspection record matches the actual number on the unit and that the plate can be read. Any repairs should be recorded before loading begins.

Security, condensation and weather protection

Flat racks are open by design, so they don’t provide the security of a closed container. The rack itself isn’t a secure enclosure. If the cargo is valuable or easy to remove, the site will need to provide the protection.

  • Use rated lashings, chains and tensioners suitable for the load
  • Keep the cargo within view of CCTV and site lighting where possible
  • Store high-value loads inside fenced or guarded yards
  • Remove loose tools, dunnage and packing once the load is secure
  • Use tamper-evident seals where they fit the cargo plan

Condensation can still be a concern on an open rack. Wrapped machinery, boxed components and steel sections may trap moisture beneath covers, particularly when the weather changes quickly.
