  • 10ft container - useful where space is restricted, including small yards, side access areas and compact estates compounds. It can hold maintenance parts, archive boxes, small stock quantities and emergency equipment.
  • 20ft container - the standard general-purpose size for many NHS sites. External dimensions are typically about 6.06m long, 2.44m wide and 2.59m high. It suits pallets, bulky consumables, cleaning materials, furniture and most temporary storage needs.
  • 40ft container - typically about 12.19m long, 2.44m wide and 2.59m high externally. It provides a single long storage space for larger quantities of equipment, central stores, major project decants or equipment holding areas.
  • High cube container - has a similar footprint to a standard unit but offers more internal height. That can help with shelving and taller items, provided transport and site clearances allow for it.

Common types

  • Dry storage container - the standard steel unit for general goods, tools and stock that doesn’t need temperature control.
  • Refrigerated container - used for temperature-sensitive goods where active cooling and a suitable power supply are available. It is more suited to controlled storage of non-patient items than to use as a clinical room.
  • Open top container - allows awkward or tall items to be loaded by crane or excavator, although it is less common for routine NHS storage.
  • Flat rack - suitable for oversized plant, generators or large mechanical components that won’t fit inside a standard container.

  • Reconditioned container - a used unit that has been repaired, repainted and checked for serviceability. It can be a practical middle option for non-clinical storage.

For NHS storage, check that the internal floor is clean and sound, the doors open without sticking, and the locking bars work smoothly. A clean, dry, wind and watertight unit is generally suitable for archive boxes, supplies and palletised stock. For more sensitive contents, a one-trip or higher-grade used unit may be the safer choice.

Security, condensation and day-to-day maintenance
