Loaded containers need more careful assessment because the weight, centre of gravity, cargo security, floor loading, and lifting method all matter.

Empty containers are usually simpler to move
An empty container can often be relocated using a suitable delivery vehicle, such as a crane-equipped lorry, forklift, sideloader, or mobile crane, depending on the site. A HIAB is a lorry-mounted crane used to lift a container from the vehicle and place it nearby. It can be useful for short placement moves where the vehicle can get close enough and the ground is suitable.
Even an empty container still needs proper handling. The lifting points, corner castings, doors, roof, floor, and frame should be checked before the move. Older containers or units that have sat on damp ground for years may have corrosion or frame damage that affects how they should be lifted.
Do not drag a container across a yard, driveway, field, or slab unless a competent contractor has assessed the method. Dragging can damage the underside, twist the frame, disturb supports, damage the surface, and make doors difficult to operate.
Loaded containers need specialist assessment
Moving a loaded container is more complex. The total weight includes the container, cargo, modifications, fittings, racking, fuel, water, stock, equipment, and any internal fixtures. The weight may not be evenly distributed, which can make lifting harder and increase the risk of movement inside the container.
A standard crane-equipped delivery vehicle may not be suitable for a loaded container. Specialist equipment such as a sideloader, mobile crane, reach stacker, heavy-duty forklift, or engineered lifting arrangement may be needed. The right method depends on container size, total weight, lift distance, ground conditions, route, and where the container must be placed.
Before moving a loaded unit, confirm the contents, approximate weight, load distribution, whether goods are secured, and whether the container floor is suitable. For high-value or fragile goods, check insurance coverage before the move. Hired containers must not be moved without approval
If the container is hired, it remains the supplier’s property. Do not move it, lift it, stack it, modify it, connect it permanently, or relocate it to another site without agreement. Hire terms may restrict movement because the supplier is responsible for managing condition, collection, insurance, asset tracking, and safe handling.
An unauthorised move can damage the unit, create extra charges, breach the hire agreement, invalidate cover, or make collection unsafe. A planned relocation is usually safer than a last-minute move when the container has become blocked by materials, fencing, scaffolding, landscaping, or parked vehicles.

Check the container size and type
Size affects relocation. A 10ft unit may be easier to reposition on a tight site, while a 20ft container is often manageable using common container-handling methods. A 40ft container needs more turning space, more placement length, and more careful lifting and transport planning.
High-cube containers are taller and may require extra overhead clearance. Refrigerated containers require service disconnection, airflow planning, and careful machinery handling. Office containers may include electrical systems, plumbing, windows, doors, partitions, insulation, steps, ramps, or furniture. Open-top and flat-rack containers may have cargo or structures that change the lifting method.

Prepare the current location
Before a container can be moved, the current position must be safe to access. Clear the route around the container, remove loose materials, unlock gates, move vehicles, and keep people away from the working area. Check whether the delivery vehicle or lifting equipment can get close enough.
Look for overhead hazards such as power lines, telephone cables, tree branches, building eaves, lighting columns, CCTV poles, scaffolding, and signs. Also check ground hazards such as soft soil, cracked slabs, drains, manhole covers, septic tanks, ducts, retaining walls, and underground services.
If the container is connected to electricity, water, drainage, data, refrigeration power, ramps, steps, foundations, cladding, or another structure, these must be disconnected or removed safely before relocation. Electrical, plumbing, structural, and lifting work should be handled by competent people.
Prepare the new position
The new location should be ready before the container is lifted. The ground should be firm, level, well-drained, and suitable for the container and its contents. Uneven support can twist the frame, making the doors difficult to open, close, or lock.
Suitable support may include concrete pads, prepared hardstanding, compacted stone, sleepers, steel beams, or an engineered base, depending on the site and use. Offices, workshops, refrigerated containers, stacked layouts, and public-facing installations may need more formal foundation advice.
Leave enough clearance for door swing, loading, maintenance, security checks, future relocation, and collection if the container is hired. Avoid placing the unit so close to fences, walls, hedges, slopes, drains, or buildings that it cannot be used safely.

Moving containers within the same site
On-site relocation is common on construction sites, farms, industrial yards, schools, clubs, and commercial premises. A container may need to be moved because a project phase changes, a new building is started, stock flow changes, access routes shift, or a better security position becomes available.
A short move still needs planning. The route between the old and new positions must be clear and suitable for the equipment used. If the container needs to be lifted over trenches, fences, walls, parked plant, welfare units, or public areas, the move may need a specialist lifting assessment.
For staged works, plan future moves before the first delivery where possible. It is easier to place a container with later relocation in mind than to move it after the site has become restricted.
Moving containers to another site
Moving a container to a different address adds transport planning. The container must be suitable for lifting and road movement, the cargo must be secured or removed, and both the collection and delivery sites must be ready.
Check access at both ends. A container may be easy to collect from a wide industrial yard but difficult to deliver to a residential driveway, rural track, school site, or restricted city location. The route may also include low bridges, narrow lanes, weight restrictions, timed access, or loading restrictions.

Modified, stacked and connected containers
Modified containers need extra checks before relocation. Doors, windows, insulation, lining, electrics, plumbing, cladding, partitions, roof-mounted equipment, ramps, stairs, and service penetrations can change the weight, strength, lifting points, and handling method.
Stacked containers should not be moved or unstacked without a suitable lifting plan. Twistlocks, stacking pins, stairs, landings, guardrails, services, and structural connections may need removal or specialist handling before the units are separated.

Export and cargo movement
If the container will move as cargo, relocation may involve more than site handling. The container may need to be cargo-worthy, have a valid CSC plate, be accepted by the carrier, be properly packed, have the required documentation, insurance, and customs clearance. A wind and watertight storage unit may not be suitable for export or intermodal movement.
