Standard containers are best for dry goods that can tolerate normal temperature changes. They are not automatically suitable for every item. Items commonly stored in shipping containers

Many dry goods can be stored in a container when they are packed, raised, ventilated, and secured correctly. Common storage uses include:

  • Agricultural items: machinery parts, fencing, animal bedding, seasonal equipment, tools, and dry supplies.

Some goods can be stored in containers but need more than a standard dry unit. Documents, books, textiles, upholstered furniture, mattresses, electronics, musical equipment, retail stock, labels, packaging, and untreated metal are more vulnerable to condensation, mould, corrosion, heat, and cold.

For these goods, consider raised storage, airflow gaps, desiccants, anti-condensation coating, ventilation, lining, insulation, or a modified container. A lined container has an internal surface fitted over the steel. Insulation reduces heat transfer and can help reduce the risk of condensation when paired with suitable ventilation.

Keep goods off the floor using pallets, shelving, or racking. Leave space between items and the container walls so air can circulate. Do not block vents with boxes or wrapped pallets. Check stored goods regularly, especially after cold nights, storms, or extended periods of closure.

Goods that may need specialist checks

Some items need specialist advice before being stored in a shipping container. This includes flammable liquids, gas cylinders, chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides, lithium batteries, food, animal feed, medicines, chilled goods, frozen goods, waste, valuable stock, and regulated materials.

A standard storage container may not provide the ventilation, bunding, temperature control, fire separation, access control, spill containment, or legal compliance needed for these goods. Do not assume that steel construction alone makes storage safe or compliant.

For vehicles, motorbikes, lawnmowers, generators, and machinery, consider fuel, oil, fumes, battery condition, ventilation, leaks, ramps, floor loading, and insurance. Choose the right container size

Container size should be based on volume, weight, access, loading method, and site space. A 10ft container is suitable for small sites, domestic storage, clubs, and tools. A 20ft container is a common all-round option for household goods, construction tools, business stock, and site storage. A 40ft container offers more volume for bulky goods but needs more delivery space and a longer placement area.

Heavy, dense goods may reach weight or floor-loading limits before the container is full. Bulky but lighter goods may make better use of a 40ft unit. If you need frequent access, a smaller container or racking layout may be more practical than a long single space.

Choose the right container type

A standard dry container is suitable for many general storage uses. Other container types may be better where goods have specific handling, loading, or temperature requirements.

  • High cube containers: useful where extra internal height is needed for bulky goods, racking, or conversion work.

Condition grades and storage suitability

Container condition affects appearance, service life, security, weather resistance, and suitability for modifications or export. A one-trip container is a new or near-new unit that has usually carried cargo once before release for sale or hire. It is often chosen for public-facing storage, self-storage sites, schools, offices, and conversions.

A used wind and watertight container can be suitable for many storage uses where dents, faded paint, surface rust, and previous repairs are acceptable. It should keep out normal wind and rain when the roof, walls, doors, and seals are serviceable.

A cargo-worthy container is assessed for carrying cargo, subject to inspection, loading requirements, carrier acceptance, and documentation. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate used for international transport. Storage-grade containers should not be assumed suitable for export without checks.

Security for stored goods

Security depends on the container, lock, site, and user procedures. A lockbox is a steel cover fitted around the padlock position to help protect the lock from bolt cutters and tampering. A suitable padlock should fit correctly inside the lockbox and meet any insurer requirements.

For high-value tools, retail stock, machinery, documents, or customer goods, consider layered security. This can include lockboxes, controlled key access, lighting, alarms, CCTV, fencing, regular inspections, and careful container placement.

Sale or hire for storage

Hire can suit renovations, construction projects, seasonal stock, events, short-term business storage, and temporary site needs. Buying can suit long-term storage, modification, branding, export packing, or repeated use.

For hire, think about delivery, access during the hire, return condition, and collection. The container must remain accessible for removal, so avoid placing it where later scaffolding, stock, landscaping, fencing, or parked vehicles will block collection.

Delivery, site access and placement

The storage plan must include delivery. Most containers are delivered by a heavy goods vehicle, and many placements use a HIAB. A HIAB is a lorry-mounted crane used to lift a container from the vehicle and place it nearby.

Check road access, gate width, turning space, overhead cables, branches, building eaves, soft ground, drains, manhole covers, septic tanks, and underground services. The placement area should be firm, level, and well-drained. Uneven support can twist the frame, making the doors difficult to open, close, or lock.
