Exact dimensions vary by manufacturer and condition, so measure the cargo before booking. A piece that’s shorter than the nominal rack length may not fit once timber bearers, lashings and lifting points are included.

The main type choices are fixed-end and collapsible-end flat racks. Collapsible units can make return transport, repositioning and storage easier because the ends fold down.   • Cargo-worthy means it has been inspected and is fit for service, although it may not be cosmetically clean.

  • Export-prepared means it has been checked for international movement, including markings, fittings and any required certification.

Some buyers request an inspection standard such as IICL. IICL is a condition standard used by surveyors and repairers to assess container condition and repair quality. It doesn’t remove the need to inspect the actual rack, including its end walls, corner castings, deck and lash points.

Loading, securing and protecting a flat rack

The open sides make loading easier, but they also change the security arrangements. Cargo on a flat rack remains visible for inspection and handling, yet it isn’t protected by a locked steel box. Security must come from the lashing method, the cargo support, site control and any temporary cover used.

Common securing methods include chains, ratchet straps, timber dunnage, chocks and edge protection. Dunnage means packing timber or blocks used to support and level a load. The appropriate method depends on the cargo’s shape, weight distribution and export route. Anything that can move needs restraint. Flat racks are less prone to condensation than enclosed containers because air can move freely around the load. Moisture can still form under tarpaulins, shrink wrap or weather covers, though, especially when wet equipment is sealed too tightly. For moisture-sensitive cargo, use dry packing, breathable wrapping where suitable and regular checks after rain. With steel parts, keep contact points dry and don’t place damp timber directly against the metal without an isolating layer.

Maintenance is straightforward on longer jobs, but it still needs doing. Check the deck, end walls, corner castings and lash points before and after use.
