Where flat racks fit in the Leeds market

Choosing the right size and rack format

Start with the cargo, not the frame. Measure the full load, including skids, cradle frames, packaging and any protruding parts. A machine that looks compact on the floor can become difficult to handle once it’s blocked up for lifting. Check the centre of gravity too. A long, light load may still need careful balancing to prevent twisting or an uneven overhang.

External width is commonly around 2.44m, but the usable space depends on the rack design and the cargo plan. On collapsible-end units, the end walls can fold down. That can help when the frame is returned empty, stored or loaded from the side. Fixed-end racks are often chosen when the cargo needs more support during transport.

Don’t choose by floor area alone. Tare is the empty weight of the unit, while payload is the maximum cargo weight it can carry. A heavier rack leaves less available payload, so check the complete specification rather than just the visible size. Lashing points matter too, and may decide whether a rack is suitable for export or road movement.

Hire, purchase and condition grades

Hire is often the straightforward choice for a one-off move, short project or temporary site requirement. Condition deserves close attention. A flat rack carries the cargo directly on its frame, and the frame is often part of the restraint system. A unit may look tidy but still be unsuitable if the deck, corner castings or lashing points are worn.

Inspect the frame, end walls, locking pins, lashing eyes and any repair plates. Ask for photographs of the corners and deck surface. Most standard delivery vehicles won’t place the cargo onto the rack for you.

Export compliance, security and weather protection

CSC stands for Convention for Safe Containers. It’s the inspection and approval system used to confirm that a container can move safely in international transport.

The cargo must also be restrained in a way that meets the carrier’s requirements, since open cargo is more exposed to movement than a boxed load.

Security works differently on a flat rack than it does on a closed container. The frame is open, so the cargo is the main concern. Use chains, straps, corner protectors and tamper-evident seals where appropriate. Accessories or loose items travelling with the cargo should go in a locked box or separate secure unit. Flat racks don’t create the same condensation risk as enclosed containers because air can move through the frame. Cargo covered with tarpaulin or shrink film can still trap moisture, though. Wet timber, steel with surface moisture and coated components may sweat beneath a cover. Use breathable covers where possible, keep packing dry before loading and inspect the cargo after rain.

If the load needs wind and watertight protection, choose an enclosed container instead. Wind and watertight means sealed against rain and wind-driven dust. It doesn’t turn an open frame into a storage box.
