Open-top containers are mainly available in 20ft and 40ft lengths. Both use standard ISO footprints, so they’re compatible with shipping lines, road trailers and rail wagons.

A 20ft open-top container measures 6.06m long, 2.44m wide and 2.59m high externally, with an internal volume of about 32 cubic metres. A 40ft unit measures 12.19m long, 2.44m wide and 2.59m high externally, providing around 65 cubic metres of capacity.

Standard condition terms

  • One-trip units: Made overseas and shipped with one cargo load. They have clean paintwork, intact tarpaulin seals and pristine floors.

Deliveries are generally made using HIAB crane-equipped lorries. The vehicle’s hydraulic crane arm lifts the empty container from the side of the truck and places it at the drop point.

  • Allow at least 3m of clear width through entrance gates.
  • Use firm hardstanding, such as concrete, tarmac or compacted hardcore, for the delivery route and drop point.
  • Keep 6m to 8m of overhead clearance, with no power lines, low cables, branches or building eaves in the way.
  • Allow up to 5m to 6m of total lateral width for the lorry’s hydraulic outrigger stabiliser legs.
  • Make sure the drop area is level across all four corner castings.

Soft ground or uncompacted earth can allow the steel frame to sink and twist. This is known as racking. Once the frame distorts, the rear doors and swivel header may jam.

Security, condensation, and weatherproofing

An open-top container needs regular attention to keep out weather and protect its contents. Theft prevention matters too, especially where machinery or valuable materials are stored.

Fit a heavy-duty steel lockbox over the locking staples on the double end doors. The lockbox covers the padlock area and helps protect the padlocks from angle grinders and bolt cutters.

Managing condensation and weather ingress
