Flat racks for oversized and awkward loads

Flat racks suit cargo that’s too wide, too tall or simply too awkward for a closed container. They provide a strong deck with fixed end walls or folding ends, but no side walls or roof. That lets you load from above or from the side, then secure the cargo directly to the frame.

That arrangement works well in Scunthorpe, where local work often involves steel, fabrication, plant, engineering parts, recycling equipment and oversized assemblies that won’t fit neatly into a standard container.

Choosing the right size and load format

Choose a flat rack by looking at the cargo length and width, its lifting points, and the way it will be restrained. The two common sizes are 20ft and 40ft. A 20ft rack gives you a shorter, heavy-duty deck, while a 40ft rack provides a longer footprint for spread-out loads.

Two capacity terms need checking. Tare is the empty weight of the flat rack. Payload is the maximum cargo weight it can carry once the rack itself is included. Compare both with the total weight of the cargo, timber bearers, lashings and packing materials.

Length is only part of the decision. Also check:

  • The position of the load’s centre of gravity
  • Any overhang beyond the frame
  • The number and position of lifting points
  • How the freight will be secured for road movement
  • Whether the destination yard can accept the final loaded dimensions

If the load is tall but still fits within a rectangular footprint, an open-top container may be more suitable. Hire, purchase and flat rack condition grades

Hire tends to suit short projects, seasonal demand, temporary fabrication work and one-off export movements. Buying usually makes more sense when the rack will stay in regular use, move between jobs or become part of an established storage and dispatch process.

When comparing container hire with container sales, focus on how often the rack will move, who will inspect it and whether the site needs a unit that remains available without collection and return planning.

Common condition grades

  • One-trip means the unit has made one sea movement before sale. It will usually show limited wear and have a cleaner appearance.
  • Cargo worthy means it has been inspected and judged fit for freight use. Structural condition matters more than cosmetic marks.
  • IICL refers to a container inspection standard used for repair and survey quality, with tighter condition criteria than basic cargo worthy grading.
  • As-is means the unit is sold in its current condition. The buyer accepts the visible wear and any maintenance that may be required.

Check the grade against the job you’re planning. A rack that’s suitable for static yard storage may need a higher standard if it will travel by road or sea. For export use, ask for the current inspection status, the condition of the corner castings and end frames, and clear photographs of any repairs.

Wind and watertight describes a container that keeps out wind and rain. It doesn’t apply to a flat rack because the cargo remains open to the weather. If the load must stay dry, the cargo will normally need to be wrapped, covered and protected by the shipper, and a flat rack may not be the right format.

Delivery access, placement and Scunthorpe site conditions

Delivery can determine whether a flat rack project runs smoothly. Scunthorpe has a strong industrial base, but older yards, shared access roads and active steel or fabrication sites can mean tight turns, uneven hardstanding and restricted delivery windows. Agree the vehicle and unloading method before dispatch, not when the truck reaches the gate.

What the site needs

  • A firm, level surface that can support the delivery vehicle and its load
  • A clear gate and enough room for the vehicle to swing into position
  • Safe overhead clearance for cranes, HIAB equipment and raised loads
  • No low cables, branches, canopies or building projections near the lifting area
  • Space for the truck to stand while the cargo is unloaded and secured
  • An internal route that avoids tight corners, weak verges and soft ground

Flat racks are often delivered on articulated transport. Depending on the model and whether the rack is empty or loaded, placement may involve a HIAB, forklift, reach stacker or crane. For oversized loads, a crane or suitable lifting plan is normally the safer choice.

If the rack is being dropped into a working yard, leave enough room to reach the lashing points and cargo edges later. That small piece of planning often makes inspections and adjustments much easier.

For Scunthorpe deliveries, plan around access from the M181 and A18 corridors, as well as heavier traffic serving industrial estates. Where a site sits near port activity or a busy yard, agree the delivery window early so the vehicle doesn’t arrive during peak movements or gate congestion. Security, weather protection and maintenance

A flat rack doesn’t provide the physical security of a closed container door. Site security, suitable lashings and careful handling therefore carry more of the responsibility. For longer on-site storage, use a fenced or supervised area, record the handover condition and keep detachable equipment or loose fixings protected separately.

Check the following before movement:

  • Chains, straps and clamps are rated for the cargo weight
  • The load can’t shift if the vehicle brakes sharply
  • Timber dunnage or bearers suit the shape of the load
  • Lashing points remain visible and aren’t buried under packaging
  • Loose accessories have been removed before transit

Condensation is less of a concern than it is in a closed container because the cargo isn’t sealed inside a metal box. Water can still collect on the cargo, timber packing or recesses around steelwork, though. For metal, machinery or wrapped components, use corrosion protection, drainage gaps and weather covers where needed.

A cover shouldn’t hide markings, create a sail effect or interfere with safe lashing. In practice, the cover and restraint system need to be considered together.

Maintenance is straightforward, but it should be regular. Before each move, inspect the deck, corner castings, end walls and visible welds. Clear dirt, scale and swarf from the bed, since loose debris can damage the cargo or prevent it sitting level.

If you own the unit, touch up damaged coating and deal with corrosion early. If you’ve hired it, report damage as soon as you find it so the next user doesn’t inherit a defect.

For long-term storage, review whether a closed container would be more suitable. Flat racks are strong and flexible, but they’re not the answer to every storage requirement.

Export use, freight terms and paperwork

Flat racks are often used for export cargo that won’t fit inside a standard container. For sea freight, the unit will normally need a valid CSC plate. This is the safety approval plate showing that the container has passed the required structural checks for transport and export use.

The IMO explains the official CSC treaties. Before shipping, make sure the plate is visible and legible and check:

  • The cargo dimensions fit the booked vessel and route limits
  • The weight and description have been declared correctly
  • The lashing method suits marine and road movement
  • The CSC plate is current and readable
  • Any overwidth or overheight movement has been checked against port and road restrictions

Before dispatch, keep the packing list, weight declaration, lifting plan and photographs of the secured load together. If the cargo travels by road before export, check the route for height, width, turning space, bridge restrictions and road limits.
