Choosing the right size and layout

Flat racks are generally available with 20ft or 40ft footprints. A 20ft unit suits shorter machinery, compact plant and cargo with a manageable overhang. A 40ft unit gives more deck length for longer equipment, several pallets, pipe bundles or fabricated assemblies. Both normally use the standard 8ft-wide ISO footprint, so they work with common container handling equipment and transport methods.

Typical external dimensions are around 20ft by 8ft or 40ft by 8ft. The exact height depends on the folding end structures and the unit’s specification. If the load is close to the available space, measure every part of it, not just the main body. A machine may be narrow at its base but wider around guards, handrails or lifting eyes.

Before choosing a rack, check the load’s length, width, height, weight and centre of gravity. The centre of gravity is the point at which the load balances. If it sits too far to one side, the frame may move during lifting or transport. Check the load’s certified lifting points too, along with whether it can be lifted from above and whether any components will overhang the deck after securing.

Payload means the maximum cargo weight the unit can carry. Tare is the empty weight of the frame itself. The safe working load needs to account for both, as well as the handling equipment used to move the unit.
